No kidding! 50′s in Wisconsin. In January! Boat put away and no ice for ice fishing. Triple dog dang! At least the 5200 can cure without the heater on.

  2. Alex says:

Almost launched the Whaler this week. Then I noticed the occasional ice flows.

That whole Titanic thing really knows how to take the fun out of winter boating!

  3. Dick Dow says:

Matt, I see that you are heading in the right direction…

  4. WoodyGal says:

It could be worse. You haven’t winterized your boat and The temp just dropped to twenty degrees!

  5. Mark says:

No complaints in preservation land! Stripped the transom planks and got CPES on the frames in January in New England!

  6. Texx says:

On Thursday I hopped on the old hog a went for a ride through the countryside.

Not the traditional 600 mile day ride, but it still felt good to be riding in January which is uncommon in these parts…

In flips, polishing chrome, 65 degrees an hour north of Philly !
    God bless global warming

    • Rick says:

Global warming= melting ice caps= more places to boat= more boating= more fossil fuel burning= more global warming. A win-win situation. YEAH!!

    Matt,

There are at least 2 ways to “winterize” a small runabout.

One way is to tempt the fates with your blood preassure, getting upside-down with tools to remove all the little brass ‘drain plugs’ in your block, exhaust manifold, waterpump, etc., etc., etc., and HOPE it all drains.
THEN remember to tow the boat UP a steep enough hill to drain the water from the exhaust pipes so no freezing cracks happen there.
Then reverse the same process in the spring.

    OR;

    Route the engine intake such that you suck 5-gallons of “blue-pop” (environmentally-friendly ‘antifreeze’ good to 100-below, for Marine use, at $4.99/gal) or;
“Pink-pop”, (environmentally-friendly ‘antifreeze’ good to 50-below, for RV use, at $3.99/gal).

Run the engine until the blue-pop or pink-pop comes out the exhaust.

I recommend the ‘blue-pop’ because its designed to be most environmentally-friendly to our WATERWAYS.

$25, and you can just GO BOATING when you will!

You don’t have to worry if you found all those little drain plugs, you don’t have to worry if you replaced them all?

I live in Northern Michigan, its January, there is NO SNOW here. We had 2-inches for a white christmas, but it was gone the next day.

Aren’t you somewhat South of here?

    WAIT A MINUTE !

When my kiddos wanted to go tubing so that we could enter the Last Gasp event, I was blasted- blasted I tell you, about that.

And now I see today that some bonehead is skiing behind Thunderbird, clearly with SNOW on them thar hills in the background!

That’s it, C’mon kids, we’re going tubing today!

Go Boating! Cruised today, wonderful weather….so warm that the Boat Safe Heater didn’t even come on over the night I spent aboard.
Then Went to visit David, he not around…..Missed a good day!
Did find Ryan Gadow and wife and three little ones working away on his cruiser in Urbanna Va.

Days like this are a true gift!

    John in Va.

  11. Phil Jones says:

Matt, don’t you have to let that new varnish job cure before you go out and sc^$w it up again!
