I was speaking with some other classic boaters this weekend about our boats, and a theme kept coming up, folks talking about there nerves being jittery before starting up there classic boats, and although boating is fun. The most calming moment was pulling up to the dock at the end of the day. What? Classic Boating is all about boating on the water. Right? Not really. As we were talking I realized that I felt the same way most of the time. But what is there to be nervous about? Mmmm, could it be the chance of an explosion, a plank coming loose, the motor going dead, steering giving out, some obscure cable snapping, the sun baking the varnish, leather drying out, that bung on the aft deck getting one more milometer looser. What about the prop, is it tight enough, or the shaft, those can break. Is the bilge working? Mind you, none of this is about the water or weather, or countless 11 year olds on there jet ski’s buzzing all about. Add that into the mix, and it’s surprising that we even go out on the water. But we do, and while out there buzzing all the plastic boats, there is this moment of freedom, this feeling of being away from it all. That is until you look in the bilge and there is oil! HA. As my Mother used to say, “it’s all fun and games til someone gets there eye poked out! Happy Woody Boating, you are not alone!
