Sunnyland ACBS Show on Lake Dora. Tavaras, Florida Here We Come. Kinda!

The Woody Boater crew working at night at FLA -HQ, many a late night trying to take in the days activities..

It’s only 86 days away, that’s 2 3/4 months. Are you ready? This is the event of spring. The big one, the mother of all shows, and the best part, the start of classic boating season. This year is going to be a very special year for sure with the planned showing of the freshly restored/ preserved On Golden Pond Boats… in the water. We also plan on being there for the week before the show, staying at Woody Boater HQ on the lake. The gang will be there in full force along with Suzy our go to Woody Boater boat. 86 days in the grand scheme of things is a mere blink! So you have some time off this week, get out that sand paper and start rubbing.. Send out your chrome, or gauges.. It’s time.. Tavaras is a very cool place and the town has gone a long way in in making the classic boat community very very very very welcome. Here is the Sunnyland website so you can plan your trip..

It is the mother of all shows. That Sunnyland group is really an army. Ive never seen so many people helping at a show, They had so many volunters they had 3 shifts.
    Hopefully Ill make it

Can’t wait! But what about those winter projects I haven’t gotten done yet? If my mind goes now, there’s no hope of getting finished?

On December 19th the Sunnyland Chapter ACBS sent out an urgent e-mail to it’s members to inform them of the potential lake level issues in 2012. The chapter and it’s members are actively involved and taking steps to help resolve the situation.

The following is an excerpt from the Sunnyland Chapter e-mail describing the situation. They were asking local members to attend a Lake County Board of Commissioners meeting to voice their concerns on Dec. 20th. We will keep you posted with any further updates.

The St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD) decided recently to STOP allowing water to flow into Lake Dora and related lakes from Lake Apopka. On Saturday, one Sunnyland member said that Lake Dora water levels have ALREADY dropped TWO inches in just 17 days. One cited reason is a Lake Apopka activist group wants to restrict water outflow to Lake Dora in order to build marshland water levels in Lake Apopka without concern for other lakes that depend on Lake Apopka natural water flow..

Shutting off the water flow to Lake Dora will result in lower water levels, reducing ability to navigate the Dora canal or for many waterfront owners, low water levels will reduce their ability to get their boats out of their docks. That is what happened four years ago, and I encourage you to cover the issue more fully, especially that the St. Johns Water District is NOT based in Lake County, and seems to have made the decision without any concern on the effect on Lake Dora, Lake Eustis, Lake Harris, and Lake Griffin.

Can’t wait, will be there. I wish the Sunnyland folks had an advance purchase set of credentials for those of us who will not tow a boat down this year, but still want to support the event at a level above the basic daily walkup admission. Seems they could make a few extra bucks on that…I would certainly sign up.

Here we are counting down the days to the next season, yet here in Minneapolis it was 52 degrees yesterday. If the winds had been blowing the right way so your bay was still open water, a guy (with balls of steel) could have almost gone woody boating on Christmas Day in the Northland.

  9. John Rothert says:

Woodygal, I will check that out, thanks, John in Va.

  10. jerri says:

    Hi John,

I believe Woodygal is right, in 2009 we were registered for the event without a boat. That way we were able to attend the Picnic, etc.
