That has got to hurt. I like the rescue boat better, more fuel efficient. It was some guy in a canoe that set up the chop that filpped Rock.

  2. Tom F says:

Now thats acting! Did Rock win an Oscar for his role. Love the Woodyboater hats. Pretty rough on the lake that day Rock, I would have to say pilot error not conditions is why he flipped.

  3. Rick says:

I don’t know, that water looked pretty flat there, LOL. It would take how long for the utility to reach him if he’s doing 180mph? Fun footage.

  4. matt says:

Cant we just suspend reality here.. maybe it was a engine malfunction.. Maybe he hit a rock… No pun intended.. If you look, it was a camera malfunction, the entire scene flipped.. Maybe it was an earth quake..

  5. m-fine says:

No point in sending a rescue boat, he would have sunk like a Rock.

Thank you, thank you ladies and gentlemen, I’ll be here all week. Oh and try the chicken French it is fantastic.

  6. Randy says:

That was so cool! Anyone know what the rescue boat was? Loved Janes floatation devices-er life jacket.

  7. matt says:

Its Chicken chicken francaise ha! And a U22

  8. Texx says:

I think Rock Hudson hit a Rogue Wave…

  9. WoodyGal says:

Great vintage clip, now I’ll have to watch the whole movie! I too like the U-22, probably in “lightly used original” condition. My hearing has now been damaged by Jane’s piercing screams. That’ll be trouble at the Mecum auction.

  10. Alex says:

“Engine malfunction,” Matt? Perhaps. But who cares about that. Once I saw the co-pile-ette step from that boat, I was only interested in seeing a “wardrobe” malfunction.

  11. Anonymous says:

A bigger question. Who now owns that U-22?

  12. Matt says:

    Oh god, not you again!

  13. Randy Mueller says:

Helped for 3+ years on the restoration of this hydro at the Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum in Kent, WA. It was a very satisfying experience to see her come back to life and run again in 2008. Doesn’t matter whether it is a boat, airplane, car, house, etc., big or small, when you are working on a piece of ‘history’ you feel that you are saving something for future generations to enjoy. Just find your passion and leave something of value behind — the world will be just a little better for it. Well, thats’ how I justify all of my restoration efforts!

  14. Brian Robinson says:

The more I look at this video, I am pretty sure the scenes at the dock, like that with the U-22 were shot at Lake Arrowhead (500 miles south, here in Southern California, an hour from Hollywood). All of the running shots of the Hydro were at Tahoe. It does not appear the hydro was ever actually in the water at Arrowhead, just a studio mock-up and early “special effects” to make it look so.

  15. jimmuh says:

….aside from the *acting*, and the in-cockpit shots, that’s some of the best footage I’ve seen on WB!
    thanx
